Shopping for good nutritious groceries at an affordable price can be quite challenging. Times have changed and so has our food and how it is made. Now as a mother, I take the responsibility to prepare well-balanced meals for my family, but sometimes find it challenging to find foods with more of the good than bad. When the opportunity was given to me to shop at ALDI, a new grocery store to the southern California area, I was excited to see what was in store for me.
Let me start off by saying that this shopping experience is unique in that ALDI stores are quite small and intimate compared to a national grocery chain. It didn’t feel overwhelming or cluttered; instead it felt like a small local grocery store with bright lights and easily accessible shelves. I was a little nervous about the size, thinking they wouldn’t carry a lot of the things I was looking for, but I was wrong. I got exactly everything I needed, and then some. They even carried seasonal non-grocery items!
Glancing around at the products on the shelf, I began to notice a trend. A lot of the products were labeled as Organic, Non GMO, or Gluten free. ALDI has its own SimpleNature® brand that occupied a good amount of the shelves, which offers good for you products, keeping out those pesky hormones and processed food. I have never bought anything gluten free really because of the price, but to my surprise, a lot of the products were affordable, giving me the opportunity to try them out.
In this shopping trip, I was able to purchase fresh produce, fruit, dairy, milk, meat, pasta, bread, and even some snacks and ice cream for my kids. I experienced shopping for high quality ingredients at a low affordable cost. My shopping haul, with the intention to feed 6 people, was under $50!
The check out process is quite different than a normal grocery store. Firstly, it’s encouraged for you to bring your own reusable bags or can purchase their bags. Instead of the cashier putting it in a bag for you right away, you are asked to move over to the bagging area, and pack up your goods on a side table after you have paid. I found this to be interesting and actually quite liked it. It gave me the time to pack my own bags, and making sure everything was packaged to my liking, knowing where everything is.
It makes me excited to share my experience with ALDI, simply because we are now able to shop Organic, Gluten free, high quality items for an affordable cost. The meal was a great hit with everyone! Both of my kids asked for seconds, and that rarely happens, so I know it must have been good.
ALDI does not focus on the high cost of shopping marketing by placing fancy ads or lure you into a loyalist card. Instead, I can see they cut these costs by providing a simple shopping experience, which puts the money back into the products, keeping the cost low for consumers. I would rather shop low cost quality goods.
All 25 new stores are now open in the Southern California. Check their website out here https://www.aldi.us/ to find a store near you. I am pleasantly surprised and highly recommend ALDI for those who are looking for high quality products, at a low affordable cost.
